I have always been a car enthusiast, basically my entire life, but I never had the chance to ever drive stick. I would read articles, watch youtube videos, and try to figure out any way possible to learn, but it just never happened for me...until tonight.
A coworker has a 2012 jeep wrangler with a stick. He was telling me how he let another coworker drive it and he stalled it 5 times. I thought to myself, holy crap, maybe this is my chance!
I boldly asked if I could try and do better and he said sure.
I reversed out of the parking spot just fine, albeit a little fast. I then tried to put it in first gear and....stalled. Well F***. Let’s try this again. Clutch in, first gear, gas gas gas...and tires squeal like crazy, but I DIDN’T STALL IT!!!
Now, I was too afraid to stop for a while because I didn’t want to stall again. I drove around in second gear for about 3 minutes in the parking lot, then parked and we went our separate ways.
I must have had the biggest grin on my face. Now all I can think about it, when can I do it again!?

Oh how I want to sooo bad, but I am a college student on a minimum wage-ish budget so this isn’t really an option...Id be way to afraid to buy a sub $1500 car, worried about repairs and maintenance.
Plus I'm still paying on my current car.

I don’t know if I could trust myself to know what I am looking at. Is it a diamond in the rough or a total shitbox?
Yes, I could/will take all potential cars to a mechanic to get checked out, but thats even more money. What do I do if the engine blows and I am out a grand...I just don't have the expendable income at the moment

That feel! It feels so good, I did it about a week or so ago with my friends 1997 Acura EL. It’s so satisfying once it gets going.

Honda Civic or Accord. You’ll be set. I’ve had quite few under that amount. I love the 91-93 Accord. Such classic lines.

Good for you! Although I would recommend learning by the method I used: Practice getting the car rolling without touching the gas pedal. Just sloooooowly let the clutch out until the car rolls. Revving the engine and chirping the tires is good fun, but it’s a bad habit to acquire if you are going to drive a manual for any length of time.

I understand. I’ve had 3 cars I paid <$1000 for. Latest a being my metro I purchased in ‘06 after cutting 1/2 the top off my Cherokee & it being winter was getting to cold to drive around.
Enter the Metro and it’s been the car I’ve owned & driven the longest / furthest.
If you find something look up the online forum for it, there is one for everything. That has helped me with a trans swap in metro, and some electrical issues.

Congrats! Even though it would clearly be a niche market, I’m thinking about starting a side business teaching people how to learn to drive stick.

When I’ve taught people how to drive stick, I take them to a parking lot and have them practice pulling away in 1st gear without touching the gas at all.
To learn how to drive manual well, first you learn how to do things properly in a slow fashion. Then with practice, you can do things properly in a quicker fashion.

YES YES YES
I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face. Buy a manual car. It’s the best way.
